An Overview of Vodafone’s Growth in India

Vodafone Group Plc. is the UK based telecommunications company which spread its wings like wildfire in India as Vodafone India. Vodafone Group Plc. is the second largest telecommunications service provider in the world. Its advent in the country began with the acquisition of Hutchison Max Telecom Limited or Hutch in the year 2007, for a total cost consideration of approximately 11.1 billion. When the deal was executed, Hutch was a licensed telecommunications service provider in 16 regions of the subcontinent, but with time Vodafone India expanded its operations and is now the second largest mobile communications network after Airtel. As of August 2016, Vodafone boasts more than 200 million subscribers and the market share of 18.42%.

Another aspect which was a major influencer in terms of the popularity of Hutch and later Vodafone was the minimalistic approach they showed towards advertising. Hutch’s advertisements which aired on televisions featured a pug following a boy to unexpected places with a tagline “Wherever you go, our network follows”. It was highly appreciated for the thought and innovation, which gave the brand a huge boost. Later, Vodafone brought in ZooZoos, which gained immense popularity and became a reason for wider acceptance of the new entrant.

Vodafone India has kept its mergers going and in November 2011, it collaborated with ICICI Bank to introduce M-pesa in India. M-pesa facilitates money transfers, payment at select stores, virtual mobile recharge, DTH recharge, and utility bill payments.

In March 2017, Vodafone has entered into a deal with Idea Cellular to enter into a merger which will make the entity the biggest telecommunications network India. The merger is expected to come to its conclusion by March 2019.
